Product sourcing with Oberlo

Selling the right products is absolutely vital for the success of your Shopify store. Finding killer products however, is incredibly difficult. Researching products is often a long and arduous process, while finding suitable wholesalers can seem impossible.

That was my opinion up until I discovered Oberlo. Oberlo is a free Shopify APP, which has already started to change the way online sellers source and sell their products.

What is Oberlo?

Oberlo is a product-sourcing assistant on steroids. At its core, it allows you to quickly and easily search through AliExpress and import products into your Shopify store. Importing includes pictures, descriptions, title tags and any additional information.

Furthermore, Oberlo manages to display shipping times as well as costs for your preferred target market. In the case of PercyPets, we want to sell dog toys and accessories to customers based primarily in the United Kingdom. This offers an impressive level of transparency, and allows us to only import products that we can sell at a profit.

Installing Oberlo

To start using Oberlo, we need to head over to the Shopify APP store and search for “Oberlo”.

Click on the search result marked in the screenshot above, and then click “Get”. You will then be redirected to your Shopify APPs dashboard.

Product Sourcing with Oberlo

Now we’re onto the good stuff. To start using Oberlo to source products, click on “Find products” and enter a product description of your choosing. Next scroll down the page until you’ve found a product you would like to sell in your store.

Once you’ve found a great product, check to see if the product cost plus the shipping cost still leaves you with enough expected profit to make it worth selling. If everything looks good, hover over the product and click on “Add to import list”.

Keep refining your product search until you’ve found 5-10 products to import.

As a next step, head over to your Shopify store, click on “Products” and then “Collections”.

If´you’re in the same position I am, then you do not yet have any collections. We want to change this, because collections are a great way of grouping similar products and increasing their chances of being bought through search. If you imagine somebody browsing through the generic Amazon fashion category for example, you will know that the listings will include shoes, coats, t-shirts and everything else under the sun. This significantly reduces the customers chances of finding what they want. Specific collections reverse that.

Creating your first collection is quite straightforward. Give it a memorable and descriptive title, and provide a more detailed explanation in the description. It’s one of the many excellent features Shopify has, that you can add conditions which automatically sort new products into the right collections.

Now that we’ve created a number of appropriate collections, it’s time to head back to Oberlo.

Importing products into your Shopify store

The next step is to import the products we’ve chosen on Oberlo into our Shopify store. We can do this, by clicking on “Import List” towards the top right of the screen.

Then all we need to do is give the product an appropriate title, description and tags. Once this is done, be sure to pick your favourite images and inspect the different size/colour combinations. When you’re happy click on the green “Push to Shop” button.

Checking your products were imported correctly

Now it’s time to see if everything worked the way we expected. Head back to your Shopify dashboard and click on the “Eye” icon next to “Online Store”. Voila, you’re products are ready to be purchased!

You now know everything you need to get started sourcing products with Oberlo.
